  • In Leaves of Grass Walt Whitman sings nature and his symbiosis with America, he sings the universe and his awareness of it all, but above all he sings the people and their quest for individuality and immor-tality.

  • Today, this masterful collection remains not only a seminal event in American literature but also the incomparable achievement of one of America’s greatest poets—an exuberant, passionate man who loved his country and wrote of it as no other has ever done. Walt Whitman was a singer, thinker, visionary, and citizen extraordinaire. Thoreau called Whitman “probably the greatest democrat that ever lived,” and Emerson judged Leaves of Grass as “the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed.”

The text presented here is that of the “Deathbed” or ninth edition of Leaves of Grass, published in 1892. The content and grouping of poems is the version authorized by Whitman himself for the final and complete edition of his masterpiece.

  • With an Introduction and Bibliography by Stephen Matterson, Trinity College, Dublin. Walt Whitmans verse gave the poetry of America a distinctive national voice. It reflects the unique vitality of the new nation, the vastness of the land and the emergence of a sometimes troubled consciousness, communicated in language and idiom regarded by many at the time as shocking. Whitmans poems are organic and free flowing, fit into no previously defined genre and skilfully combine autobiographical, sociological and religious themes with lyrical sensuality. His verse is a fitting celebration of a new breed of American and includes Song of Myself, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, the celebratory Passage to India, and his fine elegy for the assassinated President Lincoln, When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomd.

  • In June of 2010, a team of Texas State University astronomers confirmed that the celestial event inspiring Walt Whitman's 1860 poem "Year of the Meteors" was a type of meteor procession so rare that only two others have ever been documented. How many other poems from Whitman that we have only before considered in terms of poetic imagery may actually have a basis in scientific reality? This book analyzes the potentially deeper scientific meanings to be found in Whitman's poetry through an investigation of the language to which he most often resorted when discussing matters of science. The first chapter investigates Whitman's borrowings from one of his greatest influences and his nearest contemporary in poeticizing the scientific world, Thomas Carlyle. Chapter two examines the extent to which Whitman's novel interweaving of science and poetry form the basis for Leaves of Grass. Finally, chapter three attempts to explain some of the most elusive and mystical passages of Whitman's poetry in modern scientific terms. This books offers to anyone interested in Whitman or the natural world an illuminating insight into the relationship between art and science.
